We would not currently recommend AI speech translation for mission-critical meetings, legal proceedings, courtrooms, diplomatic discussions or sensitive government events where accuracy, confidentiality and security are paramount. In these situations, professional interpreters remain the preferred solution.Speech translation quality is influenced by the language pair, technical subject matter, speaker behaviour, audio quality, internet connectivity and event preparation. A well-prepared glossary can significantly improve results, but AI may still struggle with challenging speaker behaviour, strong accents, language switching and content requiring substantial cultural or contextual judgement.One important difference between AI and a professional interpreter is how errors are handled. Experienced interpreters recognise ambiguity and can often resolve or clarify uncertainty. AI does not. If it misunderstands the speaker, it will usually continue to produce a fluent, confident translation rather than indicating that it is unsure. While this can also be challenging for human interpreters, it is significantly more difficult for current AI systems and can result in poor speech translation quality.AI also struggles when several people speak at the same time. Rather than separating each speaker, it attempts to recognise as many words as possible and produce a coherent sentence. The result is often a fluent but inaccurate translation that does not correctly reflect what was said.Humour, idioms, cultural references, sarcasm and emotion remain difficult for AI. It may translate the individual words correctly while missing the intended meaning, timing or emotional impact. Professional interpreters naturally adapt their delivery to reflect the tone, intent and atmosphere of a discussion—something AI cannot yet reliably reproduce.Another limitation is the way people naturally speak. Speakers often leave sentences unfinished, change direction halfway through an idea or correct themselves as they go. Experienced interpreters instinctively restructure these thoughts to communicate the intended meaning clearly.
